In Nepal, People have always complained about the price of the internet, be it broadband or mobile data. The pick-up of CG Net gave a big sigh of relief. However, the company’s slow growth has been a matter of night terrors for many. In the middle point of all of this, the Nepal government is planning to minimize internet prices in the country.
The government is planning to decrease the price of the internet to make it more reachable for consumers. Chief of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoCIT), Dr. Baikuntha Aryal, stated at an event that plans have been made to reduce service fees and give affordable internet to all.
He acclaimed, “We are studying whether Wi-Fi or mobile data can have reduced charges”.
According to him, both the private service providers and the government will work together to decrease fees and expand access. On the other hand, Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), intends to reduce the country’s internet price to 2% per capita.
According to the current broadband policy, internet costs ought to be 5% of the country’s per capita income. Joining forces, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has proposed lowering the price of internet access to 2% of per capita GDP by 2025. As a result, NTA has initiated the process, and policy change is underway currently.
At today’s date, the internet is more of a need than a luxury, the government’s efforts to reduce internet prices are noteworthy. We wholeheartedly hope that the idea will soon become a reality, and Nepalese will be able to use cheaper internet rates.
