MobiKwik Data Breach: Data of 3.5 Million Users Got Hacked

Online payment app Mobiwik, one of the popular digital payment apps in India got hacked yesterday. Mobikwik wallet has made online recharge, bill payment, and money transfer easy and convenient but recently this company was hacked by a French hacker ‘Elliot Alderson’. KYC details of 3.5 million MobiKwik users got leaked which appears to be the largest KYC data leak in history.

The sensitive information including KYC details, addresses, Aadhar card, PAN card, Cardholder’s card data was put on the dark web for sale. The leaked information contains 36,099,759 files and is 8.2 terabytes(TB) large. It is said that Rajshekhar Rajaharia, an independent security researcher brought this topic to light first. It was back in February when Rajaharia tweeted that MobikKwik user data is being sold on the darknet. But Mobikwik straightly denied this fact. In a response, MobiKwik said “Some media-crazed so-called security researchers have repeatedly attempted to present concocted files wasting precious time of our organization as well as members of the media. We thoroughly investigated and did not find any security lapses. Our user and company data is completely safe and secure.”

On Monday French hacker Robert Baptiste also known as Elliot Alderson tweeted “Probably the largest KYC Data Leak in history. Congrats MobiKwik…”. Supporting his tweet was a screenshot attached of the leaked data. The MobiKwik leak has been a hot topic on the internet today. MobiKwik customers are demanding a  clear clarification from the company. It is not easy for MobiKwik to revert to this data breach.
