Qualcomm, the Snapdragon processors manufacturing company is bringing its own phone. The company is partnering with Asus to introduce its very first smartphone named the “ Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders” The smartphone carries a heavy price tag but unfortunately, the specs are the same as what we have seen before in other flagship Android phones. It is said that the handset will be directly sold to the Snapdragon Insider fan community, a community channel built by Qualcomm on various social media platforms earlier this year.
Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders Overview
The flagship phone flexes a 6.78-inch Samsung AMOLED display that can deliver up to 1200 nits of peak brightness. The screen is able to run up to a 144Hz refresh rate providing users a flawless interaction. It is a full-HD+ panel with a 1080 x 2448 pixels resolution and covers 111.23% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. Also, it can produce HDR10+ content and the view is clear as crystal with 395 PPI density. The display is safeguarded from the toughest ever Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.
On the design front, the handset is very similar to the Rog 5 phone from Asus. The only difference is that ‘Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders’ is built 0.35mm thinner and 29g lighter than the Asus Rog 5. It is available in a single Midnight blue color.
Under the hood, the latest Snapdragon 888 runs the show teamed with Adreno 660 GPU for graphics. However, it would be really exciting to see the more powerful Snapdragon 888 Plus model powering the device given that the company has already announced it. The internals appears to be the same including the thermal design between the Asus ROG 5 and the Qualcomms new phone. Hence, it is safe to say that the new device will perform similar to the Rog 5. In terms of RAM and storage, the device comes with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM paired with 512GB of in-built storage.
Moving to the camera department, the company has provided a triple camera setup at the back promising a “professional-quality camera” experience. It has a 64MP Sony IMX686 primary camera, an 8MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and a last 12MP ultrawide Sony IMX363 sensor. Furthermore, the primary and telephoto cameras both come with optical image stabilization (OIS). The lenses used are pretty common to those used in previous Asus phones. Upfront, there is a 24MP front-facing camera that delivers the perfect take every time.
Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders records stunning 8K video at 30fps. 4K video up to 60fps, and 1080p video up to 60 fps. On the other hand, the selfie camera is limited to record 1080p video at 30fps only.
Battery and Extras
Compared with Asus Rog 5, the thickness of the phone is reduced by 0.35 mm but at the expense of battery capacity. The battery capacity has shrunk 33% down to 4000mAh in the new Qualcomm device contrary to the 6000mAh in the Rog Phone 5. However, the 65W fast charging support stays the same. More highlight includes dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, A-GPS, stereo speakers, Snapdragon Sound Technology, Illuminated Snapdragon fireball icon on the back, etc.
