The Acer Swift 3 2020 is a budget laptop that strikes far above its weight. While some people put comfort, versatility, and portability, above the utmost performance here laptop manufacturers have been coming up with light machines over the years. Most of the other laptops in that price range do the bare minimum, whereas the Swift line shows that even a cheaper device can offer a better computing experience. Acer Swift 3 is not just a competent laptop but a proficient Ultrabook as well.
Acer continued its minimalist design aesthetic with Acer Swift 3. It looks just as sleek as ever. Definitely taking a hint from the Apple MacBook Air, the thin, lightweight aluminum chassis should feel familiar to anyone conversant with earlier Acer Swift 3 models. The color options are a little more diverse on AMD variants as it’s all silver here. The Lid houses a matte-silver finish with polished reflective Acer logo on the back which is about as flashy as the laptop gets, and no wonder for some – that’s exactly what they’re looking for.
Moving to the display, it has a 14-inches (1920×1080) FHD panel. Acer has compromised a fair bit on the front in order to reduce the cost of the laptop. Even though the company sells a 13.5-inch with a squarish aspect ratio in the western markets, unfortunately, they aren’t currently available in Nepal. However “Acer ComfyView” IPS LCD panel is not capable of reproducing the most accurate colors. So, if you’re into graphics-intensive work, this is not for you. Having said that, it is more than good enough for other casual tasks. The bezels are quite minimal. It weighs only 1.18kg which is relatively thinner than other laptops in this budget.
Here, we have the option either to go with team blue or team red. If we choose Intel we get to choose between Core i5-1035G1 and Core i7-1065G7. Here, both are 10th Gen Intel processors based on a 10nm process. Its clock speed is 3.60GHz and 3.90GHz, respectively. Appealingly, the i7-1065G7 variant is flexible with Intel’s Project Athena. It is a quad-core CPU with a base frequency of 1.30 GHz along with a max turbo frequency of 3.90 GHz.
On the other hand, we have to decide between Ryzen 5 4500U and Ryzen 7 4700U.
The Swift 3 handles multimedia content creation pretty well for a system with either 4 or 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM. And you should avoid the 4GB RAM variant altogether since that’s just not enough nowadays.
Unfortunately, the RAM stick is soldered into the motherboard which means you won’t even be able to upgrade it if necessary. On the graphics side, you have the Intel UHD graphics and Radeon Vega graphics. Besides this, Swift 3 also enjoys NVIDIA’s MX350 GPU. This means that the laptop will be able to handle tasks such as light photo editing and even playing eSports titles. In terms of storage, you can configure it with up to 512GB of M.2 SSD.
Talking about the battery, The biggest improvement is in the battery department. The laptop has a large 3-cell 55.9Wh (4200mAh) battery. Thanks to the onboard power-efficient CPU, it should easily last over 8 – 9 hours.
Speaking of opening it up, the island-style keyboard features responsive arranged with a fair bit of spacing. However, there is no separate Numpad on this laptop. You do get a Windows Hello-enabled fingerprint scanner on the center-ish right corner of the chassis. While some might find the keyboard to be a bit confined, the keys are spaced well for a laptop of its size, and the black keys have a backlit with soft white LEDs for better visibility.
As for ports, Acer loaded up Swift 3 with a 1x USB 2.0, 1x USB Type-C Gen2 ( DisplayPort over USB-C), 1x USB Type-A 3.1 Gen1, 1x HDMI, Kensington lock, 1x 3.5mm headphone/mic jack, and finally 1x DC-in jack .There’s the absence of an SD card reader or optical drive, but that’s pretty typical of an Ultrabook nowadays. The USB-C on the Intel variant supports Thunderbolt as well. Moreover, you can also charge the laptop through the USB-C connection (5V/3A). On the wireless side, the Swift 3 consists of a Wi-Fi ax and Bluetooth 5.0. There are two speakers present on this laptop capable of delivering stereo audio.
